Hale on Glass etches and carves glass and stone surfaces by sandblasting. No lasers or acid is used. Sandblasted glass is a surface treatment produced by using compressed air to spray the glass or stone with an abrasive to roughen a portion of it, or the entire surface. Sandblasting a glass surface diffuses transmitted light, reducing glare and giving the glass a frosted appearance. The glass can either be etched or carved, solid or with shading.
Etching the glass means that we sandblast the glass enough to affect the surface only. Etching does not go deep into the glass and it creates a one-dimensional effect. Carved glass is achieved by sandblasting deeper into the glass, creating a more detailed image and a three-dimensional sculpted effect. The carved edges within the image will actually appear whiter and brighter, as they pick up and reflect the surrounding light. The image will appear as if it is floating within the glass. The inclusion of at least 24% lead oxide in the composition is required by law for crystal to be called full lead crystal. The lead lends brilliance and weight to the product. Crystal without lead is still crystal, but most people commonly perceive it as glass. Crystal without lead is not any less valuable than full lead crystal, particularly when it is thick and heavy.
Seeds or bubbles found in glass are not flaws. Bubbles are formed by gasses when chemicals are united by the melting of raw materials. Seeds do not affect the quality of the glassware or its beauty.
